Jennifer Saunders: my fight against breast cancer

But now "back feeling normal" she has spoken about it for the first time and claimed that she has now forgotten about it and she "can't believe it actually happened".

"Apart from the fact I have to take some medication now, I don't feel like a person who's been through it," she said.

"I feel very fortunate and well cared for, and lucky to have been able to go private. People have much worse times, so it would feel ghastly to want to evoke any sort of sympathy or something."

She said that the only time during her chemotherapy and radiotherapy that she said to herself "that's unfair" was when her face came out in a rash because of the medication.

The star, who is the most successful female comedian of the last 25 years, said that she kept her illness private rather than secret and she did not mind when it came out ? or even losing her hair.

"I think the idea of losing your hair is still very potent, emotional thing," she said.

"Not for me, I didn't mind so much. What I didn't realise was that every bit of hair would go. Then, when it comes back, it comes back a lot.

"Every hair you ever had is suddenly back, reborn."

Miss Saunders may just be putting a brave face on her suffering as her husband last year told how it was "slow, miserable grind" to make her better.

"It was horrible for her and for us, because it's very hard to support someone and make them feel better through that misery," he said last November.
