The X Factor 2011, ITV1, review - Saturday 5 November

Even Janet Devlin, one of the strong favourites up until now, looked uncomfortable as she stumbled through the Jackson 5?s I Want You Back.

Only three acts emerged with any credit. Chief among these was Misha B, who belted out Proud Mary with big hair and even bigger confidence. After her shock appearance in the bottom two last week, she was back to being a charismatic cut above the rest.

The two Scousers in Gary Barlow?s Boys category were the others to shine. For a big-boned former biscuit factory worker who was made to wear a duffel coat last week, Craig Colton looked surprisingly at ease dancing his way through a rave rendition of Bryan Adams? Heaven. Meanwhile, Marcus Collins turned in a confidently razzle-dazzle Reet Petite, complete with black and white introduction and Fifties styling. A tad musical theatre, perhaps, but enormously entertaining. His mentor Barlow said it was ?the performance of the season?, which was not just hyperbole but irritatingly American. We call them ?series? over here, sir.

The X Factor has been struggling in the ratings and shows of uneven quality like this won?t help its cause. At least the double elimination should shorten next week?s. Small mercies in troubled times.
