Sue MacGregor, the former Today presenter, tells me that despite recent criticism of the programme, it should be more combative, not less.

?The spin doctors have taken over,? she says. ?With politicians and a lot of people in public life you have to goad them to get them to tell you the truth. I think people like a bit of a ding-dong in the morning. It?s nice to choke over your cornflakes.?
