?In recent weeks, they have sometimes been subjected to unacceptable verbal abuse. They act with my authority and their directives must be followed.?
Despite the rising tempers in the car park, Fr Walsh described the cathedral, which was built between 1882 and 1910 with money from the 15th Duke of Norfolk, as ?a place of prayer that is open every day to all who come in search of peace and tranquillity?.
He told The Sunday Telegraph: ?It?s a domestic problem. We?re not sure who?s been causing it, whether it?s parishioners or outsiders. It was just words, not physical attacks, and is not happening every week, but it has happened once or twice, which is why we?ve addressed it. We?re confident we?ve now put a stop to it all.?
There is no suggestion that Smith, 70, who converted to Catholicism at the age of 22, has been involved in any of the road rage incidents. The chef, who has written several cookery books with religious themes, including A Feast for Lent and A Feast for Advent, regularly joins worshippers at the cathedral after watching Norwich City, of which she is the joint majority shareholder with her husband, Michael Wynn-Jones.
?Delia Smith is a regular visitor here,? said Fr Walsh. ?I?ve no idea how she gets here, whether she drives or not, but she does appear sometimes.?
Smith was on holiday and unavailable for comment. Her religious faith is mirrored in her devotion to Norwich City, on which she has reportedly spent about 12?million of her fortune after saving the club from bankruptcy in 1996.
Sometimes, she has got carried away by her passion, such as when she marched on to the Carrow Road pitch in 2005 and yelled ?come on, let?s be ?aving you? into a microphone.
