Germaine Greer:'The English don't write great novels'

?They think the character?s misogyny is the author?s misogyny when, in fact, it?s trying to show how these attitudes work.?

By and large, English novels don?t impress the Australian Greer. ?The English don?t even write the best novels,? she said. ?It?s the French who are the best writers.?

When pressed on her favourite French novelist, Greer was, however, non-committal. ?We could say Balzac, we could say Flaubert. Right now, I don?t know. I don?t read fiction ? it?s a waste of time.?

Greer says at the moment she is more interested in her 125 acres of Australian rainforest as she?s currently making a documentary about it. ?I?ve spent the whole day learning names of creepy crawlies. I?ve just begun the butterflies, but I need help, I need an entomologist, come and stay with me,? she says.
