LAPD ask Twitter royalty Lady Gaga and Ashton Kutcher for help with 'Carmageddon' on 405 freeway

The 405 is often described as the most congested freeway in the United States.

It was also the scene of the slow-speed chase in which O J Simpson was pursued by police following the death of his ex-wife in 1994.

LAPD spokesman Lieutenant Andy Neiman told the Los Angeles Times: ?The whole idea is just to re-message the theme of avoiding the 405 area and that it's going to be a mess if people don't stay away.

?Twitter is a way to reach that whole demographic that could be oblivious to the 405 closure for that weekend.?

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa made no attempt to down play the expected chaos.

He said: ?There's gridlock on the 405 virtually any time of the day, but particularly during the rush hour.

?And if you think it's bad now, let me just make something absolutely clear - on July 16 and 17 it will be an absolute nightmare.?

Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said: "Stay the hell away is the best advice we can give. Everybody has to suck it up.?
