Bee Gees star 'too ill to meet Prime Minister'

"He requests that since this is a difficult time for him and his family his privacy be respected," it added. "Robin would like to thank all his friends and fans for their good wishes and sends them love."

Last August the Bee Gees star, whose twin brother Maurice died in 2003 after suffering complications from a blocked intestine, had emergency surgery for the same condition.

It is claimed that Gibb suffers from abdominal pains on a regular basis and has been fighting the condition for nearly two years.

Yesterday, he was due to meet the Prime Minister to discuss his upcoming Poppy Appeal charity single, 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You'.

After cancelling the meeting due to ill health, he appeared on Alan Titchmarsh's ITV chat show to promote the song.

Fans were shocked by the Bee Gees star's "gaunt" appearance at the studio.
