Rarely one to keep his own counsel, Louis Walsh joined in. It all left an unsavoury taste in the mouth. This is a search for a pop star, not a saint. Contostavios should know this better than anyone. Her own band N-Dubz have a chequered past, to say the least.
There were countless mentions of contestants being ?out of their comfort zone? and so they were. No-one came out with reputation intact. Elfin Janet Devlin and Popeye-mouthed Craig Colton are two of the strongest singers left but looked awkward.
There was irritating footage of Frankie Cocozza out on the town this week, portraying him as an unreconstructed, Robin Askwith-style laddish lothario ? which would be a lot more bearable if he had the voice to back it up.
As ever, Walsh threw the kitchen sink at staging his acts. Kitty Brucknell was like a Las Vegas cabaret turn, with distracting demonic styling and flanked by fire-eaters.
Johnny Robinson descended on a platform, clad in a Bacofoil blazer, crooning I Believe In A Thing Called Love by the Darkness in a falsetto so strained that it made his microphone hand tremble. It was preposterously camp and the crowd loved it. Head judge Gary Barlow asked, ?Where did you get your suit? Argos?? ?No, from your wardrobe Gary,? retorted Robinson to much mirth.
The judges had clearly got Cowell?s memo and hammed up the conflict at every turn. Head judge Gary Barlow described Welsh diva Sami Brookes as ?totally boring? and added that Walsh ?takes bad acts and makes them worse?. Barlow even ad an attack of honesty and criticised his own act Cocozza.
The contestants? pre-performance VTs also had the hallmarks of Cowell, combining sob stories with gossipy party footage and inquisitions by tabloid hacks.
So who will leave tomorrow? Both bands struggled with poor song choices but deserve another chance. That leaves Cocozza and deeply beige barmaid Sophie Habibis edging towards the trapdoor.
The production team will be hoping the ratings aren?t dropping down it too or they can expect another conference call with Cowell come Monday morning.
