The 250 guests included Sarah, Duchess of York, and her daughters, the Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, who were pictured enjoying the summer sunshine at tourist spots such as Rome's Spanish Steps before the nuptials.
They mingled with Paris and Nicky Hilton, heiresses to the eponymous hotel empire, who spent the day before the wedding shopping in some of Rome's most upscale boutiques, and the Italian Formula One impresario Flavio Briatore and his wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, a swimsuit model.
"Had the best time at my friend's rehearsal dinner," Paris Hilton told her 4.5 million Twitter followers. "The bride looked so stunning, like a true princess."
The Hilton sisters were photographed in Rome with their friend Fergie, the lead singer of the American band The Black Eyed Peas, who performed in the historic castles courtyard along with Eric Clapton, at a reputed cost of nearly 1 million.
The glitzy tone of the celebrations, expected to last until Monday, was in sharp contrast to the more understated wedding arranged by Mr Coppola for his daughter, in a little-known region of Italy which the Hollywood legend counts as his ancestral home.
Sofia Coppola, 40, the award-winning director of films such as Lost in Translation and Somewhere, was getting married to Thomas Mars, 35, the lead singer of the French rock band Phoenix, and the father of her two small children.
It took place in front of around 80 guests in a simple ceremony in the town of Bernalda, from where her great-grandfather emigrated to the United States in 1904.
Her father was seen mingling with the locals in the days preceding the wedding, sipping Campari in a local bar and wandering around town in an oversized pair of floral-patterned Bermuda shorts.
The ceremony took place in the garden of historic Palazzo Margherita, a 19th century mansion that her father is converting into a boutique hotel, with 10 luxury suites, a swimming pool and a cinema.
The guest list was a closely guarded secret, but it was rumoured to include George Lucas, the billionaire director of the Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark films, the actor Johnny Depp, and Miss Coppola's actor cousin Nicolas Cage.
Initial plans for the wedding banquet reportedly revolved around dozens of roasted sheeps' heads, but the menu was changed at the last minute, apparently in deference to the 40C heat forecast for Saturday.
