Signed Beatles record sells for more than 9,000

It was sold by a local Liverpool woman who got the band to sign the record after listening to the group at The Cavern as a youngster.

A cap belonging to John Lennon was sold for 3,200 and other highlights included rarely seen photographs of the band taken at Newcastle City Hall and the Sunderland Empire as Beatlemania was sweeping the world in November 1963.

The door of number 38, Kensington, went for 2,300 and will stay in the Fab Four's home city and go on display at the Museum of Liverpool Life.

The burgundy coloured door was at the entrance to a studio in the Kensington area of the city where the band, then known as The Quarrymen, did their first ever professional recording session.

The annual sale, part of the Beatles Convention in Liverpool, took place in the Paul McCartney Auditorium at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

Stephen Bailey, manager of the Liverpool Beatles Shop, which staged the sale, said people often come into the shop with items, asking for advice Antiques Roadshow-style.

Today's top-selling Please Please Me single was brought in by one such local, he said.

"It was just a local lady with a signed record asking 'Is this worth anything?'

"I said 'Yes, that's worth several thousands of pounds'. And here we are, 9,000 later.

"People often wander into the shop asking 'Is this worth anything?'

"There is still massive attraction for Beatles memorabilia. There are still people willing to pay fantastic prices."
