David Walliams swim raises 1million

His mother, Kathleen, said: "People think they're part of this because they can actually see him doing it. He's the, sort of, nation's sweetheart because he's doing this - rescuing dogs along the way and waving to people when all he wants to do is lay down almost. I'm very, very proud of him."

Thousands of cheering fans greeted him last night as he made it to Teddington Lock after a 21-mile stint - his longest day so far.

Walliams passed Richmond and Twickenham this morning and was due to take a break at Kew Bridge, resuming his mammoth effort at 3pm, to allow for the tide. He will battle probably the toughest conditions yet with a difficult current and increased river traffic, to finish around Westminster Bridge.

Walliams had inoculations and was given a precautionary course of antibiotics in order to brave the Thames, part of which has had 500,000 cubic metres of sewage poured into it in the past week.

Walliams, 40, said of the support he has received: "I never expected this to catch the public's imagination like it has - there seems to have been a real carnival atmosphere around it which is lovely."

Over the weekend the funnyman rescued a pet Labrador which was struggling to get out of the river near Cookham Lock in Berkshire.

Supporters can sponsor the performer at Sport Relief.
