Nancy Dell'Olio and Trevor Nunn enjoy a tempest

After Brian Paddick beat him to the nomination as his party's candidate for next year's London mayoral election, Opik said: "I think, like every great politician, you have to have some wilderness years. Nelson Mandela had them. Many other people had them."

Mandrake is reminded of how a young Republican senator called Dan Quayle compared himself to John F Kennedy during the 1988 vice-presidential debate. Lloyd Bentsen, his Democrat opponent, responded: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine.

"Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy."

Chris Huhne's night out

A play that posits the notion that riots can be a positive force was never destined to be a big draw for members of the Government these days. Still, Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary, was among the first to see Our Days of Rage, the National Youth Theatre's production at the Old Vic Tunnels in Waterloo.

His daughter, Lydia, 22, appears in the show, billed as "a response to the uprisings across North Africa, the Middle East, and Middle England." Paul Roseby, the director, says the minister has been "supportive." He insists: "We're not criticising the Government."
