John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has his critics, but it becomes patently clear the more one sees of his wife Sally Bercow that he is a man possessed of an almost saintly degree of patience and fortitude.
Even Mrs Bercow has admitted, however, that her recent appearance on a reality television show placed a degree of strain upon their union.
Their many friends are, however, rallying round and yesterday I received reports that Ed Miliband took time to share a pot of tea with them at Portcullis House in Westminster. They made, so I am told, a rather sombre trio.
The Labour leader may have come somewhat late to the joys of matrimony ? not to put to fine a point on it, his sons Daniel, two, and Samuel, six months, attended his marriage earlier this year to his long-term girlfriend Justine Thornton ? but Mandrake trusts nevertheless that he impressed upon the Bercows the importance of sticking together until death do they part.
Colin Farrell's death by nicotine
Colin Farrell has an endearingly understanding nature when it comes to gossip columnists.
?I once heard that I had a Nicorette patch suit made for me when I was making Miami Vice,? the Irish actor recalls of an item which appeared in The Sun-Herald in Sydney.
?I was trying to give up cigarettes at the time, and apparently the way I did that was to line the inside of a suit with Nicorette patches.
?This was apparently how I was mainlining my nicotine. It is actually kind of a genius idea, when you think about it. But of course, one would overdose on nicotine poisoning around about Take One. Can you imagine? 'We?ve lost Farrell. Death by cigarette ? and he didn?t even inhale.??
Harry Ferguson's bonding process
James Bond gave MI6 a glamorous image, but he is not a representative employee. ?Ian Fleming, his creator, worked for Naval Intelligence, so tends to emphasise the sort of excitement which doesn?t normally occur,? says Harry Ferguson, a former MI6 man who now plans to put the record straight with his first spy thriller, False Flag.
